  • Interdisciplinary Basic & Applied Research:
  • Aquatic Ecosystems, Fisheries, Pathobiology,
  • Aquatic Toxicology & Aquaculture

An aquatic ecosystem is an ecosystem in a body of water. Communities of organisms that are dependent on each other and on their environment live in aquatic ecosystems. The two main types of aquatic ecosystems are marine ecosystems and freshwater ecosystems.

Fisheries Science

  • A public service profession that includes the pursuit of scientific knowledge about the aquatic organism to be harvested or utilized including resource management activities.

Aquatic Toxicology

  • The scientific study of the effects of manufactured chemicals, other anthropogenic and natural materials and activities on aquatic organisms at various levels of organization, from the molecular, genetic, subcellular through individual organisms to communities and ecosystems. Aquatic toxicology is a multidisciplinary field which integrates toxicology, aquatic ecology and aquatic chemistry.

 Aquatic Ecosystem:

  • An ecosystem is a community of organisms that live and interact within a particular environment. In an aquatic ecosystem that environment is water, and all of the ecosystemí s plants and animals live either in or on that water. The 2 main types of aquatic ecosystems are marine and freshwater.

Pathobiology

  • An interdisciplinary science that focuses on understanding the cause and nature of disease and its impact on animals and humans.

Aquaculture

  • Aquaculture is the study and farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, shellfish and plants. The term aquaculture refers to the cultivation of both marine and freshwater species and can range from land-based to open-ocean production.
